Course Description:

A course designed to teach and improve necessary skills to succeed in a career field.  Topics include: career exploration/exposure, core employability skills/workplace competencies, leadership abilities/workplace initiatives, and other related principles.  One hour lecture per week.   

Statement of Course Goals:

The goals for the course are:

  1. To acquaint the student with career exploration/exposure tools used In decision-making
  2. To provide the student with an understanding of the core employability skills/ workplace competencies needed in a business environment.
  3. To provide the student with an understanding of common workplace issues
  4. To help guide students in their career preparation.
  5. To provide each student with the opportunity to explore and complete resumes, cover letters, and other work related items.

Learning Outcomes:

At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Career Information - Identify different sources of information on careers.
  • Interest Inventory - Identify and develop a personal skills/interest inventory.
  • Employment Skills - Identify core employability skills and workplace competencies.
  • Communication - Analyze communication skills needed on the job at various levels.
  • Resume - Demonstrate the ability to produce a resume, a cover letter and participate in a job interview.
  • Legal Issues - Identify legal issues related to the workplace.

Participation Policy:

Students are expected remain active weekly in all online work in Canvas .  There are weekly discussions that are included as part of the grade.  It is essential that you follow the guidelines set forth to receive full credit on your discussions.

Classroom Policies:

Weeks begin on Tuesdays and finish on Mondays at 11:59 pm. Students are expected to submit all assignments through Canvas.   Discussions require an initial post early in the week (Thursday or Friday).  Reply to at least two of your classmates posts by Monday at 11:59 pm.  Discussions cannot be made up. Late assignments are not accepted.

In order to be successful in this class each student should:

  • Sign into Canvas 2-3 times during the week to get weekly updates, assignment details and submissions, participate in discussions.
  • Allow two (2) hours’ time to complete reading, assignments, and studying for each class. Some assignments may take more time.
  • Read the assigned textbook before participating in discussions.
  • Complete assignments according to timeframe discussed.

Academic Instruction Emergency Management Plan

In the event that Chesapeake College needs to close for an extended period of time due to a flu pandemic, severe weather event, or other emergency situation, consideration will be given to the timing and duration of the closure as follows:

Closure during the semester for up to one week – there will be an opportunity to make up work missed without significant alteration to the semester calendar.

Closure extending beyond one week (or in situations where classes are cancelled on the same days/evenings over multiple weeks) – the College may extend the length of the semester. Depending on the timing of the closure, scheduled breaks, end of semester dates, and/or the processing of final grades might be impacted.

Students can acquire information about closures on the College website or by calling 410-822-5400 or 410-228-4360.  Chesapeake College courses held at off campus sites will follow the protocol of the host facility.
