Course Description

The introduction of basic concepts and behavioral choices to become fit and well for life. All aspects of the total person will be covered, with emphasis on achievement of full potential in the physical, mental, emotional, social, environmental and spiritual aspects of the fitness and wellness. Assessment activities and program design will be emphasized.

Student Learning Outcomes 
(focus on General Education)
  1.  Express ideas coherently through an oral presentation.
  2.  Write a wellness-specific synopsis using best practices writing strategies.
  3.  Read and summarize wellness-related materials.
  4.  Apply critical thinking skills to personal behavior and life decisions through case study analysis.
  5.  Access wellness-related information using technology to retrieve and evaluate web-based sources.
  6.  Critique current issues using ethical frameworks.
Common Content Behavioral Outcomes

At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Assess various components of their current state of wellness.
  2. Demonstrate their knowledge of the components of wellness and the application of those components to their own lives.
  3. Identify, modify, and apply lifestyle factors that will enhance and promote the quantity and quality of their lives.
  4. Develop an anaerobic and aerobic plan to improve and maintain health-related physical fitness.
  5. Demonstrate their ability to access and evaluate information technology for validity.
Course Outline of Material Included in the Course            
  1. Discuss the concept of wellness and list the steps to begin a wellness training health.
  2. Discuss the principles of conditioning and guidelines for exercising.
  3. Learn to identify all types of stress and stressors as well as the effects on the individual.
  4. Manage stress by utilizing coping strategies at all levels of the stress model.
  5. Be able to synthesize the basic principles of nutrition and describe their application to weight control and various aspects of fitness and wellness/
  6. Identify personal safety issues and discuss ways to minimize risks.
  7. Minimize negative health habits as well as discuss the misuse and abuse of drugs and drug-related concepts.
  8. Differentiate between sexual behaviors and the development of meaningful, intimate relationships.
  9. Describe how communicable and sexually transmitted diseases may threaten wellness.
  10. Articulate how to overcome sedentary lifestyles and prevent both common and chronic diseases.
  11. Apply positive lifestyle habits through consumerism and establishing a healthy environment.
  12. Analyze and synthesize current fitness and wellness development by reading and critically reviewing an article or internet sources.
  13. Integrate knowledge and develop a comprehensive, individualized wellness action program.

The course material in this class will contribute to the development of many of the College’s general education objectives. This course will increase a student’s skills and knowledge to:

Academic Instruction

Students are expected to do a minimum of two hours of work out-side of class for every hour in class. Some assignments may require more time.

Policies & Procedures

Attendance and Participation/Respectful Attitude Points – Roll will be taken at the beginning of each class. Those students in attendance with the required textbook and note taking materials will be eligible to receive the maximum daily allowance. Tardy students and students who leave early will receive a percentage of the daily allotted points. Immediate contact with the instructor is recommended if a class is missed and required if an exam is missed or an assignment is not turned in on the due date. Contact the instructor through the class Canvas email or the skipjack email. If the instructor grants permission, all work must be made up/turned in prior to the next class meeting. Maximum Point Total, 50%. Failure to meet any aspects of these requirements will result in a grade of “0” points. Exams will be made up in the Testing Center in the LRC or at Chesapeake College Cambridge Satellite Center.

Emergency Management Plan

In the event that Chesapeake College needs to close for an extended period of time due to a flu pandemic, severe weather event, or other emergency situation, consideration will be given to the timing and duration of the closure as follows:

  1. Closure during the semester for up to one week – there will be an opportunity to make up work missed without significant alteration to the semester calendar.
  2. Closure extending beyond one week (or in situations where classes are cancelled on the same days/evenings over multiple weeks) – the College may extend the length of the semester. Depending on the timing of the closure, scheduled breaks, end of semester dates, and/or the processing of final grades might be impacted.

Students can acquire information about closures on the College website or by calling 410-822-5400 or 410-228-4360. Chesapeake College courses held at off campus sites will follow the protocol of the host facility.
